Bangkok alone: a first week that does not feel lonely
Night markets, cooking classes and how to find your people in a city of eleven million.
Pick a base near the BTS
Staying close to a Skytrain stop matters more than the neighborhood name. Ari and Phrom Phong are good for longer stays, Silom for going out.
Book a cooking class early in your trip
Classes are small, hands on and you eat together at the end. It is the most reliable way to meet people in Bangkok without a bar involved.
Night markets work in groups
Food at the markets is built for sharing. Go with three or four people and you get to try twice as much.
Rooftops are for later in the week
Once you have a few people to go with, a rooftop bar is a good night. On your own on day one, it can feel expensive and quiet.
